Wednesday afternoon’s head-on collision between a Chevrolet Cavalier and a Chevrolet Impala in the 8300 block of Highway 70 critically injured the driver of the Cavalier, Dylan Boldus, 18, of Charlotte, Tennessee.

The investigation to this point shows that the Impala was traveling south on Highway 70 at 12:20 p.m. when it crossed the double yellow line and crashed into the northbound Cavalier. The driver of the Impala, William Graves, 33, also of Charlotte, Tennessee, told investigators he had worked until early this morning and at the time of the crash had fallen asleep behind the wheel. Boldus and Graves were both transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Graves, who wore a seatbelt, is in stable condition. Boldus, who was not wearing a seatbelt, remains in critical condition.

There was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene.

Thirteen-year-old Gregory Handcock is in stable condition at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital after being shot Thursday night by what may have been a stray bullet.

Handcock was seated in the living room of his 14th Avenue North home at 10:30 p.m. when a single bullet came through a window. He was hit in the abdomen and immediately went to a bedroom and told an adult that he was hurt. The young man was alert and walking around when officers arrived.

Neighbors in the area visited by police said they neither heard nor saw anything suspicious in the 10:30 p.m. timeframe. Anyone with information on a person firing a gun in the vicinity of the 1900 block of 14th Avenue North last night is urged to contact the police department’s Youth Services Division at 862-7417 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. Persons who contact Crime Stoppers by phone or text message can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward.
