Campgrounds
The Natchez Trace Parkway offers three free campgrounds. Space is available on first-come, first-served basis.
Meriwether Lewis, mile marker 385, near
Hohenwald, Tenn. Amenities: 32 camp sites, pioneer cemetery, ranger station, exhibits, restrooms, trails.
Jeff Busby, mile marker 193.1, Miss. Amenities: 18 camp sites, picnic tables, exhibit shelter and overlook on Little Mountain, phone and trails.
Rocky Springs, mile marker 54, Miss. Amenities: 22 camp sites, picnic tables, horseback riding and hiking trails.
Interesting Facts about the Natchez Trace
1.The horseman on the Natchez Trace emblem is a postal worker. The Old Trace was used as a postal route in the 1800s.
2. Andrew Jackson got his nickname “Old Hickory” on the Natchez Trace. After his troops were told to disband in New Orleans, Jackson insisted on marching them back home to Nashville. His men called him “stubborn as an old hickory tree.”
3. The Old Trace was first traveled by game, then Native Americans, then settlers, tradesmen and military. Today, it’s traveled by tourists.
4. The Meriwether Lewis memorial site in Hohenwald is the only site that was designated historic before the park was established.
5. Hunting is prohibited along the Natchez Trace, but fishing is allowed.
