South Precinct detectives have now charged 39-year-old Kelly Grimm with criminal homicide and aggravated assault in connection with an overnight attack on two men at a homeless camp near Bass and Vine Streets.

Killed at the scene was James M. Clinard, 54.  Injured and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center was Brian Benson, 47.

The investigation to this point by Detective Chad High shows that Clinard, Benson and Grimm were drinking alcohol and eating hotdogs in the early morning hours.  Benson reported that he and Clinard began walking to the tent they share when Grimm attacked Clinard with some type of long blunt object.  Benson said when he asked Grimm what he was doing, Grimm attacked him with the same object before turning back to Clinard, who Benson said may then have been struck with a rock.

Benson walked to a nearby convenience store from where police were called at 2 a.m.  When officers arrived at the camp, Grimm was still there and was taken into custody.

Benson is being treated at Vanderbilt for injuries to his head, back and a broken left wrist.

Grimm is jailed in lieu of $1 million bond.  The motive for the attack has not been determined.

SWAT officers assigned to the Special Response Team this afternoon arrested accused murderer Antonio Flenoy as he hid in the restroom of a unit at the Rodeway Inn on W. Trinity Lane.  Officers found Flenoy while following up on information developed by the North Precinct’s Investigative Unit.

Flenoy, 24, is named in a criminal homicide warrant charging him with the January 20th shooting death of Tashelle Vaughn, 21, inside Vaughn’s apartment in the Charter Village complex on Rio Vista Drive.  Flenoy and Vaughn were acquaintances.
