Fifth Third Bank jumps on board as Academy partner

What if every freshman had access to financial training from some of Nashville’s top bankers? What if those same freshmen were not only trained, but assisted in setting up a college savings program before they are old enough to drive?

Those“what ifs” could soon be reality at Maplewood High School thanks to a new partnership with
Fifth Third Bank.

“Fifth Third is a highly respected corporation that takes great pride in serving its community,”
said Maplewood Principal Ron Woodard. “In partnership with Maplewood High’s Academy of
Business and Consumer Services, the bank will provide extensive training on financial literacy
for our students and community members. This will be such an asset for our community, and
we are so excited.”

The new partnership will set the stage for collaboration between teachers and financial
professionals to develop cutting-edge strategies and training opportunities for students.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in job shadows with Fifth Third bankers from
various departments such as retail, mortgage and commercial.  Also in the works is a college
savings program for all freshmen. Maplewood administrators hope to establish a system for
every freshman to open a college savings account by the end of their freshman year.

“Given the current economic state and unemployment concerns, people are becoming more
aware of their personal accountability for their financial future,” said Luis Parodi, CRA Manager
for the bank’s Tennessee affiliate.  “Volunteering our time to provide financial education gives
us a chance to empower people with knowledge to make the right choices.”

Fifth Third has already proven an integral part of the Maplewood community. Earlier this year,
the bank parked its Financial Empowerment E-Bus on school grounds for students, staff,
parents and community members to receive free financial advice.
